Indictments expected against two sacked AIPAC officers
Steve Rosen, the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee – AIPAC’s former policy director and its Iran analyst, Keith Weissman, May be facing indictment in the coming weeks for allegedly passing classified information to an Israeli embassy official Naor Gilon.

The US government, says JTA, is considering a public arrest of Rosen in handcuffs to signal its tough posture in the case. This has prompted criticism and questions from Jewish leaders.

DEBKAfile’s political sources add: A public, nationally televised display of the arrest of a key figure in the relationship Israel and the American Jewish community maintained with the administration for a quarter of a century will be extremely damaging to US-Israel ties and cause US Jewish leaders serious distress.

The case began with a sting operation which the FBI forced Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin to carry out against Rosen and Weissman. He was told to tip them off on an Iranian plan to kidnap and murder Israeli agents operating under cover in northern Iraqi Kurdistan. The two AIPAC officials lost no time in passing the warning on to the Committee’s head Howard Kohr, to Eliot Abrams, since appointed deputy head of the US National Security Council, a Washington Post reporter and the Israeli embassy official.

Rosen and Weissman claim in their defense that they saw the tip-off as part of the job they performed for many years, which required them to pass on to the Israeli embassy a warning that could save lives.

This episode ties in with the tough sanctions the Pentagon has imposed on Israel’s defense establishment."
